Women and Balding: A Taboo Subject

Men undoubtedly have a difficult time with balding; a quarter of them experience it as early as age 21, and by 50, 85 percent have significant thinning of the hair. No one wants to lose his hair, and this can cause great emotional and mental upset. But society tends to be more lenient towards men; bald can be sexy and virile. Just ask Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Patrick Stewart … the list goes on and on.

But what about women with major thinning or baldness? The list is… nonexistent Can’t think of any? There’s a reason. Women are pressured to maintain a flowing head of gorgeous locks. When genetics, age, and hormones get in the way of this goal, it can impact women’s self-esteem, self-confidence, and sense of identity. They often turn to wigs and other measures to disguise hair loss strongarticle.

40×40

Because women tend to try to hide hair loss, many people are surprised to learn that 40 percent of women experience severe thinning, resulting in visible loss, by age 40. It is also common for menopausal and post-menopausal women to experience thinning. More concerning is that nearly a quarter of women equate losing hair with losing a limb . This is devastating.

To add to the stress, frustration, and pain, the fact is that, for women, hair loss treatment has been elusive. Many effective solutions, such minoxidil and finasteride, are indicated for men only; and major studies examine male patients and subjects.

Does this mean women must hide beneath wigs? Certainly, if they feel comfortable and confident doing so, they should! But there are safe, topical treatments available that can allow them to stop hair loss and even experience regrowth.

Minoxidil for Women: Results You Want

First, a warning for women: do you not use finasteride. This is intended exclusively for men. While proven effective for males, especially when compounded with minoxidil, it has not been approved for use in women, nor have studies show it to be effective.

Recommended is minoxidil. In women, a dose of 2 to 3 percent (rather than 5 percent or more for men) applied directly to the scalp can yield results. When it comes to minoxidil for women, side effects are typically quite mild. As for men, women may experience stinging, burning, or irritation at the site of application. Extensive studies have found that a scant amount of minoxidil is absorbed into the blood streams; but this percentage is very low, thus mitigating the risk of side effects.

Lipogaine is widely considered to be the best product containing minoxidil for women. In the US, Rogaine is a popular choice for those with female pattern baldness. It is best to start in the early stages of hair loss
